Anyone got any experience of these new digital dictation gadgets from
Dixons, etc. I suspect they don't sample at high enough quality? I believe
they are only mono and d/load as a wav file to PC.

Looking for something portable that doesn't require consumables as
recordable minidiscs. Is there anything worth buying. Using camcorder and
mic at present and getting good results but would prefer more compact setup
if available. Any ideas or insults welcome.

I'd suggest that you revise your dismissal of minidisks. They're
re-usable and work out very cheap if you buy a big box of them from one
of the mail order outfits.

I can *strongly* recommend the Sharp MT877 [1] and the Sharp MD-MT280E
[2]. They aren't marketed as dictaphone devices though.

They're both MiniDisk recorder/players. Very small (especially the
MT877).

I'm not sure if the MT877 is still available, but because mine started
to get a bit intermittent on one channel (socket problem) I've now
bought the 280. Dixons/Comet are currently selling the 280 for about
£70.

Both use the AC3 format which offers LP1 with more than an hour an
extremely good quality, LP2 with about 2 1/2 hours of good quality, or
LP4 which gives good speech quality and 5 hours continuous recording.

I've been using the 877 for three years and so impressed am I with the
technology that nine months ago when I wanted to replace my home audio
kit I made sure I got a setup that included minidisk.

Thanks Tony, looked up online and found 280e but doesn't give much info on
spec. I take it it has a mic socket, etc. Can you tell me how it d/loads to
PC and is it only in one audio format?
