| I'm after my first miniDV camcorder, and its seems everybody recommends the Sony TRV33 for my budget (about the £500 mark). Looking on Jessops and a few other websites it looks like this has been replaced by a 2004 model. Can anyone tell me which is the equivalent in the new range? I know I can still get the TRV33 online, but I thought I should look at the new version first...unless anyone knows otherwise?! Cheers, Ben |

They've brought out three, the DCR-HC20, DCR-HC30 and DCR-HC40. All look the same but the main differences AFAICS a HC20 HC30 HC40 Colour VF No Yes Yes MPEG Movie No Yes Yes Still Resolution 640x480 640x480 1152x864 Memory Stick No Yes Yes Analogue Inputs No Yes Yes Jessop's Price £549 £599 £699 The HC40 has a higher pixel count on it's CCD, so you can expect better pictures with less likelihood of smearing with fast pans/image movement. I believe that there's also some minor differences in functionality. -- Tony Morgan http://www.camcord.info |

Thanks for the info...I also found this: http://www.camcorderinfo.com/content...der-review.htm which says that the HC40 has replaced the TRV33, so it looks like I'll be getting that model. Just need to find a decent price now...and see if I can get Jessops to match it! |

I've friends who've bought the 33, 60 and 80, and I've had hands-on all of them. The thing I didn't like (about all of them) compared with my trusty TRV30 (the grand-daddy of the HC40) was the touch-screen. I do prefer the turn-wheel on my 30. What I certainly don't like about the HC40 (reading the review) is the idea of no physical manual focus - and the reviewer seems to hold the same opinion.. -- Tony Morgan http://www.camcord.info |
