Above you want to copy DV tapes (note you state "tapes") to a computer.
We all know it's done via firewire (Not "fireware"). And all video software
including Windows Movie maker will recognise the connected DV cam and
capture/edit/convert etc.


used Canon GL2 to create many tapes. Some of them are already permanently
located on my RAID array, but this is a huge amount of data and I'd prefer
to use a simle quick way of copying these tapes,

What exactly do you want to do? Copy the footage from one PC to another?
Or copy DV "tapes"?

So it is "tapes" you want to copy, and you have a DV camcorder and your PC
has a *firewire* connection - that is the perfect and simplest method!
But you want to purchase an expensive standalone DV player/recorder to
do a task that your existing camcorder is perfect for???



There is one more downsize of this question.

"downsize"?? You gotta be ****ing kidding.

Probably I will replace this GL2 with some HD SDHC camcorder. There are
several items on the Internet and I'm sure there will be much more pretty
soon. But I don't want to lose an access to the tapes that I recorded. On
the other hand it's silly to keep GL2 just for reading these tapes.

So after all that demented waffle from you, the actual question is that
though
you've copied the DV footage to HDD, you still use the DV cam to view the
recordings but intend to upgrade to a newer format and want a way to view
the DV footage once you have sold your DV cam.
Copy to HDD, use editing software, Burn to DVD, playback on any DVD player.
