I need to convert some .mov files to mpeg2 using Linux.

I understand mencoder to be a useful utility and have tried this
resulting in an mpeg4 output; I need mpeg2 to play on a specific device.

I find the various codec references a wee bit confusing so would
appreciate any hints if possible.
