Talking about Currys, my friend went to Currys six months ago and paid
very near £3000 for a very large plasma TV. Then they charged him £76 on
top for a "special SCART cable that's needed if you want to get HD".

I'd known he was looking at large-screen plasmas, and suggested that he
looked around Currys and Comets, then get the make/model number of the
one he chose, then go onto the Internet to see if he could get one
cheaper.

Unfortunately my friend is not one to take any advice from anyone. In
fact the best strategy is to tell him not to do something and then he'll
likely do it :-)

Anyway, I didn't hear any more about it until he rang me to ask me to go
round and see his new TV that he'd bought from Currys. He seemed prouder
about paying £2990 for it than the actual TV itself. Needless to say, I
couldn't resist it - I took the make/model number and when I went home
did the usual search and found that he could have got the TV for £600
less than he paid and printed out the details. I didn't gloat over it -
but the next time I went round to see him as I was leaving I pulled out
the print-out saying "you might like to have a look at this". I didn't
raise the matter again and he's never mentioned it.

But the curious thing is - now I'm a newbie about TVs and HD - his TV
has no HD logo on it, nor does it have either DVI or HDMI sockets on the
back. I've *read* a little about HD TV and all the articles I've seen
mention that to be an HD TV it must have both the IEC 'HD' logo on it,
and have either a DVI or HDMI connector on the back. Perhaps someone can
confirm or deny this?

Part of the whole branding exercise on these TVs is to show that they
can accept HD input. Whether or not they can actually display them or
not is another matter. Did it have component input sockets? I'd be
interested to see what make and model it is to see what the
manufacturers web site has to day about it. Do you still have the
information to hand?
