Okay all valid responses guys, please excuse my ignorance and lack of
detail, this is all very new.

My aim is to transfer family videos to DVD noth much more ambitious at this
stage.

Bit of basic editing and puting background music on

Also would like to be able to convert some footage to managable sizes for
Web use

My PC is a P4 3 gig with 1000 ram, may be upgrading within the next year

My suggestion is that you download the free trial of EditStudio 5 from:
http://www.puremotion.com/editstudio/

The trial gives you full functionality, but puts a small logo on your
video.

If you're happy with it, it's going to cost you £100 to unlock it so
that the logo doesn't appear.

You can also download the manual if you wish (to read up before you
start) from:
http://www.puremotion.com/downloads/esuserguide500.zip
