I'd also suggest using an LCD protector - a very thin semi-adhesive
film. Jessops do one for a little over £3 (there are three in the
pack) and are large enough to be cut down for any make/model
camcorder..

How removable are these, and do they leave any residue?

I can't comment from personal experience. However they seem to be
universally available and used on mobile phones and PDAs that use touch
screens. I don't recollect any adverse comments about them or their
use. When I had my Jornada (three years ago now), HP offered them as
accessories. They are also available for the large touch screens that
are used in medical monitoring (ECG etc).

Just watching the F1 practice has reminded me that the race drivers have
similar protectors on their visors - though how much they are like what
we are talking about here, I can't say. But you often see the F1 drivers
in the rain tearing them off :-)
